SK Innovation said Friday that it started the world's first commercial production of mid- and large-sized pouch-type NCM 811 batteries. They will be supplied for energy storage systems to be installed in electronic vehicles from this December.

SK Innovation was the first in the world to succeed in the commercial production of advanced NCM 622 batteries. Since then, it has focused its efforts on developing more advanced NCM 811 batteries to meet the rising demand in the electric car industry for longer range and cost competitiveness.

As for mid- and large-sized batteries, a higher proportion of nickel in the batteries results in higher energy density, enabling a longer driving range per charge. SK Innovation raised the proportion of nickel for the NCM 811 batteries which can extend the range of electric vehicles by 100 kilometers more than existing batteries do.

Moreover, a higher use of nickel will help reduce costs, considering the prices for other cathode materials such as cobalt are rising,

SK Innovation became the first in the industry to succeed in the development of NCM 811 batteries on the back of its top-class lithium-ion battery separator manufacturing technology.

The company's proprietary technology for ceramic-coated separators is focused on better stability and is recognized as the world's second following Asahi Kasei Corporation in Japan.

In general, lithium-ion batteries with a higher proportion of nickel have problems such as overheating, gas and a short battery life. However, SK Innovation's cutting-edge technology provided solutions to these problems.

"By succeeding in the development and commercial production of NCM 622 and NCM 811 batteries for the first time in the world, SK Innovation proved its top-class prowess in battery manufacturing," said Lee Jon-ha at the SK battery research center.

"NCC 811 batteries will help extend the range of electric cars up to 500 kilometers and we will also develop new batteries that can provide a range of more than 700 kilometers by 2020."

SK Innovation CEO Kim Jun vowed to make more investments for its battery business, explaining the business strategies of the company at the SK Innovation 2017 CEO Press Conference in May.

As the electric car market grows, the market for its batteries, which account for about 40 percent of the production cost of the eco-friendly cars, is also expanding. According to market research company SNE Research, it is estimated that global battery markets will grow more than 10-fold in the next decade.
