Americans view US-Korea alliance differently
After the turbulence of the Trump administration it should be no surprise that the chaotic withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan in August reawakened questions about the United States' willingness to support and defend its partners and allies. While the immediacy of those concerns has passed, there are good reasons to believe that the United States views its commitment to South Korea very differently than Afghanistan.

IOC gets it wrong on North Korea
Sometimes there are situations where we have the ability to do something, but it isn't wise to do so. The recent decision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to suspend North Korea from Olympic competition until the end of 2022 is a good example.

Price of resuming talks with North Korea
One challenge that negotiators face is determining under what conditions are they willing to resume negotiations with North Korea on its nuclear weapons and missile programs.

Korea's tasks to reduce global emissions
When governments meet at the U.N. Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in November they will face an increasingly difficult task in limiting global temperature increases to 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century. Global temperatures have already increased by more than 1.0 degree Celsius and countries were not on track to meet their pledges from the Paris Accords prior to the pandemic. Now, as the world's economies begin to recover, the pandemic's brief reprieve from ever-increasing levels of carbon emissions is ending.

Help the world vaccinate North Korea
After initially lagging behind much of the developed world, South Korea's vaccination program has begun picking up steam. Health officials announced recently that around 30 percent of the population has received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine and they expect this figure to increase to three quarters over the next three months. South Korea's success in turning around its vaccination program, however, is at a critical stage and has implications for reopening the economy and how best to reengage North Korea.

New relationship with North Korea should focus on family reunions
Being separated from the ones you love takes a toll on life. Over time we may adapt to life without them, but as the Korean Peninsula only knows too well, a piece of us is left behind. After World War II, my Grandmother Mary left Italy and her family for a new life in the United States. Growing up, I would occasionally hear her talk of the experience of war and her family, but they were a distant presence rather than one she had seen in person since the end of the war.

Can Korean firms still prosper in China?
Last month, Hyundai Motor announced its plans to address its declining market share in China. A shift in Chinese consumer preferences toward SUVs, together with retaliation for the deployment of THAAD, resulted in a decline in the automaker's sales from 1.14 million vehicles in 2016, to less than 686,000 in 2019.

Korea should phase out internal combustion engine
In October last year, President Moon Jae-in pledged that Korea would become carbon neutral by 2050. The question is how to achieve that goal. Over his time in office, the Moon administration has taken a series of initiatives to change Korea's energy mix and reduce emissions.

Can America recover?
On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, I was sitting in a windowless office in the Senate Dirksen Office Building unaware of what was happening in New York City. On a normal day I would have headed out shortly to go pick up Senator Robert G. Torricelli and bring him to the Senate, but instead, our office would soon be evacuated due to concerns that the Capitol building could be a target.

Green policies should promote renewable energy abroad
Earlier this month world leaders gathered for the U.N. Climate Ambition Summit. The virtual summit marked the 5th anniversary of the Paris Climate Accord and provided leaders an opportunity to pledge additional carbon reduction commitments at a time when the previously scheduled COP26 in the United Kingdom was postponed until next year due to COVID-19.
