The good fight
“Liberal.” American conservatives have done a good job of making that word seem highly problematic, particularly in the political sphere. Say what you want about Republicans and the American Right, they are adept at vitriol and demonization of the opposition, and they fight for their ideology with a vigor Democrats and much of the Left often do not.

THAAD's not bad
Korea's history is a long and interesting one: buffeted by the Chinese, Mongolians, and the Japanese. Present-day Korea is still facing geopolitical challenges. The DPRK is an existential threat to Korea. It has atomic weapons, and though unlikely, may use them against Korea in a war.

Find life outside of cyberspace
These, the early years of the 21st century, were promising. On the one hand, decades prior, America and its allies defeated fascism, and slowly, and surely, most of the world democratized, and the red grip of communism and kleptocracy slowly receded to liberal democracies across the globe (Russia notwithstanding).

What's wrong with China
In less than two generations, China has lifted more people out of poverty than any other country in recorded history. Only Korea's miraculous economic development can be considered more impressive.

Christian shenanigans
There are plenty of rhetorically sophisticated atheists who argue, quite convincingly, against Christianity, and all religions. The late Christopher Hitchens is probably the best-known public intellectual and social commentator for critiquing Christianity.

Bad foreigner (2)
In an unexpectedly controversial piece, “The Foreigner: remixed,” (a continuation of an earlier piece, “Bad Foreigner”) I wrote that “some” foreigners do all of us a disservice in poorly representing expatriates with behavior they wouldn’t dare do in their home countries. I also said that these folks represent a minority of foreigners in Korea and elsewhere. The vast majority of expats here are responsible people contributing to society, whether it be through teaching, the arts, business administration, journalism, volunteerism, and the like.

I'm not from Africa!
OK. We're all from Africa. Most anthropologists concur: Africa is where humanity's ancestors originated. And yes, my genetics can be traced to African ancestry. But that's an incomplete picture. On both my maternal and paternal sides, my great grandparents are full-bloodied Native Americans, and further back, French Jews. Curiously, I'm the darkest member of my family. I often joke to members of my family that I must be adopted.

Why marry?
"Women have no wilderness in them, / They are provident instead, / Content in the tight, hot cell of their hearts / To eat dusty bread…/ They wait, when they should turn to journeys, / They stiffen, when they should bend. / They use against themselves that benevolence / To which no man is friend."- from "Women," by Louise Bogan

Some of my favorite things
As I previously wrote, I frequent cafes often to write. Caffe Bene is where I most often go. Cafes should have good WiFi, convenient power outlets, and something nice to eat or drink; loyalty point cards too are important. Coffeesmith has a much more generous point plan (four times the amount of points-per-purchase!) than Caffee Bene, and their red velvet cake is good. If they were more ubiquitous and close to where I live, I’d frequent much more often than I do. The only drawback is their point cards can only be used at specific locations, meaning you’ll have to register for a new card at e...

On secular saints
On April 4, 1967, in his speech, "Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence," Martin Luther King, Jr. stated, "The greatest purveyor of violence in the world" is America. From this speech, a whirlwind of criticism and frayed relationships ensued.
