    (102) That September in 1895
On Sept. 23, 1895, William Henry Jackson (1843-1942) of the Transportation Department of the Field Museum of Chicago and a member of World’s Fair Transportation Commission arrived at Jemulpo, Korea. It was his intention to make a quick visit to Seoul and then proceed overland to Wonsan where he would rejoin his companions aboard their steamship.

    (101) Honorable quest of friendly relations
In the late spring 1870, Max August Scipio von Brandt, the North German Minister to Japan, traveled around Japan and to the island of Tsushima aboard the German corvette Hertha.

    (100) Bicycle fever
In the summer of 1896, Horace N. Allen, one of the earliest Westerners to live in Korea, described the country as suffering from an epidemic of “bicycle fever.” He was referring to the comparatively large number of bicycles that had suddenly appeared in the streets of Seoul. But 1896 was not the first year that bicycles appeared in Korea — the first one is believed to h...

    (99) Storming of palace
Monday July 23, 1894, started out as any other day in Seoul: the streets at dawn were filled with merchants and farmers preparing for business. It was usual in all ways, except one. Japanese soldiers were seen marching through the streets toward the Korean palace.

    (98) Violence, trade in Busan in 1881
Busan in the summer of 1881 was a powder keg waiting to go off. Busan was actually two distinct settlements: Pusan (the Korean city) and Fusan (the Japanese settlement). They were separated by a couple of miles and strictly segregated from one another — only Korean traders and laborers were allowed to enter Fusan and Japanese were forbidden from entering Pusan.

    (97) Final hours of Rev. Appenzeller
On June 11, 1902, the Japanese steamship Kumagawa Maru weighed anchor and left Jemulpo bound for Mokpo, a recently opened port on the southwest coast of Korea, where it would load and unload passengers and cargo, and then proceed to Japan via Busan.

    (96) Restless spirit of queen
In the early hours of Oct. 8, 1895, a group of Japanese and their Korean associates raided the Korean palace and brutally murdered Queen Min. Doused with kerosene and set on fire, her body was reduced to only a few bones and ashes.

    (95) Here comes the rain
During the late 19th century, many of the Westerners who resided in Seoul often left the city during the late summer to escape the heat and the monsoon-like rains. Many people, like Horace N. Allen, the first missionary/doctor to reside in Korea, viewed the rains as a mixed blessing.

    (94) War of the Roses
When the United States established its legation in Seoul one of the first projects undertaken by Minister Lucius Foote’s wife, Rose, was landscaping the compound. It was a daunting task — not so much because of the size of the compound but because of what or who was buried in it.

    (93) Trade barriers for Tick Hing & Company
One of the most remarkable tomes of Korean history is the “Samguk Yusa.” It is filled with many remarkable accounts that interweave exaggerations with facts leaving us with a historical record made up of legends and tall tales.
