Proportional representation should end
On July 4, the Special Committee on Political Reform of the Saenuri Party announced its proposal to increase the number of proportional representatives in the National Assembly to 100 from its current number, 54. As the proposal keeps the same total number, 300, of seats in the National Assembly as it is now, this would change the ratio of proportional representatives to district representatives to 1:2.

Getting rid of corruption in Korea
If someone asks me what the most urgent problem in Korea is, I would say that it is corruption. According to the recent report on corruption in Asia from Political and Economic Risk Consultancy (PERC), Korea turned out to be the worst country with respect to the problem of corruption among developed countries in Asia.

Another controversy on racism: Trayvon Martin case
A 17-year-old African-American teenager, Trayvon Martin, had a tragic death in Sanford, Fla., in February last year. On his way home from a convenience store, Martin was killed by George Zimmerman, who was a neighborhood watch volunteer. Zimmerman thought Martin, a black teenager wearing a hoodie, was suspicious and followed him. This following resulted in an altercation, and Zimmerman shot Martin to death. Zimmerman was put on trial with a charge of second degree murder, but the jury determined that the shooting by Zimmerman was an act of self-defense, and acquitted him.

The Northern Limit Line
The Northern Limit Line (NLL) is a maritime demarcation line between the two Koreas. Established on Aug. 30, 1953, after the end of the Korean War, North Korea would not challenge the line until 1973. As a result, the NLL has been the de facto maritime boundary between the two Koreas in the West Sea.

Culture of alcohol consumption must be changed
In 1919, the U.S. Congress passed, and 46 states ratified, the 18th Amendment of the United States Constitution. The amendment, which was made partly due to strong protests from women’s temperance movements, completely banned the production, transportation and sales of alcohol in the U.S. Furthermore, this prohibition was not just any law, but a part of the Constitution.

The North Korea problem
When the two Koreas appeared to have finally agreed to hold high-level talks, major news media in the U.S. reported that the talks would certainly ease the tension on the Korean Peninsula. A few of them also raised questions about the North’s true motive behind proposing the talks just one day before a summit meeting between the U.S. and China. But the proposed talks between the two Koreas were cancelled, due to a disagreement over the level of delegates for the two sides.

National Economic Advisory Council
I was recently appointed as a member of the National Economic Advisory Council by President Park Geun-hye. The council is a presidential advisory body which was established on Nov. 20, 1999 under Article 93 of the Constitution. Along with an appointment ceremony, the first meeting of the council for this president was held on May 29, presided over by the president.

Yoon Chang-jung scandal
With regard to the alleged sex assault by Yoon Chang-jung, a former presidential spokesman of South Korea, the U.S. Department of State said it was not a matter the department would get involved with. This alleged crime by a presidential spokesman, a national shame to South Korea, occurred during President Park Geun-hye’s visit to the U.S., which was her first official visit to a foreign country as president. When the victim, a female intern for the Korean Embassy to the U.S., filed a complaint with the D.C. police, the police were originally going to treat the incident as a misdemeanor. As ...

New leadership in Democratic Party
A few days ago, the Democratic Party (DP), which is the main opposition party in Korea, elected a new leadership. Unlike the flying water bottles and raised voices of the past, the leadership election was conducted in a civilized manner. One thing worth reporting was that the one who got the most votes among the four leadership council members of the party had just one year of political experience. What’s more, there was not one leadership council member from a Honam district (located in the southwest of the peninsula). This result gives us hope that the practice of provoking regionalism, a ...

Korea-US Atomic Energy Agreement
Under the 1956 Atomic Energy Agreement between the Republic of Korea and the U.S., Korea is prohibited from enriching and reprocessing nuclear fuels. The prohibition was to prevent nuclear materials from being used for a military purpose (the development and production of nuclear weapons), and to stop the possible leaking of such nuclear technology to terrorist countries - in particular, to North Korea. This agreement, amended in 1974, will expire in March 2014. But over the last 57 years, the nuclear energy industry has grown rapidly, to the point where North Korea has already developed nuc...
