Dialogue is good thing
Expectations are high that North Korea and the United States will finally resume their denuclearization dialogue after senior North Korean diplomat Choe Son-hui offered to hold talks in late September, and the U.S. responded to this positively.

Attack on Saudi oil facilities
Saudi Arabia, the largest supplier of crude oil to Korea, shut down about half of its production Saturday following a series of drone attacks on two of its key installations. The closure will affect 5.7 million barrels of crude oil production a day, about 5 percent of the world's daily total. It is apparent that international oil prices will rise for the time being.

Abe's new Cabinet
Last week's Cabinet reshuffle by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is raising concerns that he is moving Japan further to the right because he appointed his conservative allies as ministers. By filling most of the lineup with hard-liners, Abe is likely to keep or toughen his strong position in the ongoing trade dispute with South Korea.

Last mission of 20th Assembly
The last regular session of the 20th National Assembly will open tomorrow amid a mixture of concerns and expectations. During the session, the annual parliamentary inspection of government offices will be conducted and the record 513 trillion won ($433 billion) government budget for next year will be subject to deliberation.

Improved jobs report
In August, the Korean economy recorded the largest job additions since the Moon Jae-in administration took office in May 2017. According to Statistics Korea, the number of employed people totaled 27.35 million last month, a rise of 452,000 from the same month of 2018. It was the steepest monthly rise since the comparable figure increased by 463,000 in March 2017.

Bringing Japan to WTO
South Korea has decided to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against Japan for its discriminatory trade measures. The decision comes 69 days after Tokyo imposed export restrictions on three key materials which are crucial for Korean companies making semiconductors and display panels.

Shipbuilders' success
Korean shipbuilders retained the top spot in global order receipts for the fourth consecutive month in August. According to data from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, local shipyards won orders totaling 735,000 compensated gross tons (CGTs) last month, accounting for 73.5 percent of the total 1 million tons of orders placed worldwide last month.
