Face up to history
South Koreans are shocked again by another right-wing scholar's attempts to distort historical facts about atrocities committed by the Japanese military during World War II. During a lecture Sept. 19, sociology professor Lew Seok-choon of Yonsei University described Korean victims of wartime sex slavery for Japanese troops as “kind of prostitutes.” He argued the Japanese auth...

Serial murder suspect identified
Police have identified a suspect in the country's worst serial murder case that took place in and around Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province. The suspect is in his 50s and is already in prison for a different murder. Police said newly analyzed DNA evidence from three of the nine rape and murder cases matched the DNA of the suspect who was in his 20s at the time of the killings.

Make real progress
The United States and North Korea are expected to resume their working-level nuclear talks soon - probably late this month - as both sides are sending out positive signals for negotiations. One such signal is U.S. President Donald Trump's remark suggesting a “new method” of breaking the deadlock in the denuclearization talks.

Stricter ban on illegal fishing
The Moon Jae-in administration faces mounting calls to crack down on illegal fishing in distant waters. This call comes after the U.S. made a preliminary decision Thursday to designate South Korea as a country that engages in illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Don't go it alone

Looming demographic woes
The government unveiled its policy to cope with demographic challenges Wednesday, marked by the ultralow birthrate and superfast population aging. At an interagency meeting, the participants discussed four primary tasks - replenishing the working-age population, cushioning the impact of population decline, coping with the rising numbers of elderly people, and managing the exp...

African swine fever outbreak
The agriculture ministry Tuesday confirmed the first case of African swine fever (ASF) at a pig farm in Paju, a city near the border with North Korea. ASF is highly contagious and has a fatality rate of nearly 100 percent. Currently, there are neither vaccines nor cures for the disease. This raises concerns about a potential spread of the virus to other parts of the country.
