China's quest for legitimacy
China's quest for legitimacy
Liberal democracy faces a legitimacy crisis, or so we are repeatedly told. People distrust government by liberal elites, and increasingly believe that the democracy on offer is a sham. This sentiment is reflected in the success of populists in Europe and the United States, and in the authoritarian tilt of governments in Turkey, Brazil, the Philippines, and elsewhere.

China on NATO's radar
China on NATO's radar
NATO's 70th anniversary leadership summit has finished in London. Headlines were stolen by an agreement to bolster the defenses of the Baltic states and Poland against Russia, yet the summit was also memorable for the new alliance focus on China for the first time ever.

UN confab views global Christian persecution
UN confab views global Christian persecution
The stunning silence of the mainstream media which often overlooks ongoing anti-religious violence has become a sad barometer of our secular societies. Clearly, while most of the attacks are “somewhere else” be it the Middle East, Africa or South Asia, the media template seems preset to default to cover other issues.

Standing up to China: Czech mayor sets high bar
Standing up to China: Czech mayor sets high bar
A Czech mayor's refusal to endorse Beijing's “one China” policy potentially sets a high bar as Western powers grapple with how to respond to allegations of excessive use of violence by police against Hong Kong protesters and the implications of leaked documents detailing a brutal crackdown in China's northwestern province of Xinjiang.

Methinks thou doth protest too much
Methinks thou doth protest too much
My friends in Seochon, Seoul, are fed up with the weekly disruption of their neighborhood. Every Saturday, the neighborhood is shut down as hordes of mostly elderly people gather for what has become an endless protest.

Eight norms for stability in cyberspace
Eight norms for stability in cyberspace
In little more than a generation, the internet has become a vital substrate for economic, social, and political interactions, and it has unlocked enormous gains. Along with greater interdependence, however, come vulnerability and conflict. Attacks by states and non-state actors have increased, threatening the stability of cyberspace.

Climate denial: new strategy
Climate denial: new strategy
What a surprise! The annual emissions report by the United Nations is now out, and greenhouse gas emissions are still going up 30 years after we first realized there was a problem with the climate. In fact, they have gone up 15 percent in the past 10 years. So much for the promises of “early and deep cuts” in emissions to avoid catastrophic heating.

North Korean missile aggrandizement
North Korean missile aggrandizement
The recent barrage of missile and multiple rocket launcher tests by North Korea can be analyzed using political, military and economic lenses. However, whichever way one examines Pyongyang's motivations, it is clear that the proverbial leopard never changes its spots.

Trump is right to hold the line in NK talks
Trump is right to hold the line in NK talks
The Nov. 28 test firing of a “super-large multiple rocket launcher” likely indicates frustration by the Kim Jong-un regime that relief from international sanctions has not been forthcoming. It also shows that the Trump administration is pursuing a measured and deliberate approach that protects both U.S. and allied interests amid North Korean provocations.

Rethinking alliance
Rethinking alliance
By now, South Korean and U.S. officials must be meeting in Washington, D.C., to discuss how to share the costs of stationing 28,500 American soldiers in Korea. The officials will find it hard to narrow their differences much in the two days of talks, the fourth such meeting. Worse yet, the negotiations to reach the Special Measures Agreement (SMA), a defense cost-sharing acco...
