Hong Kong deserves to be treated as adult
President Xi Jinping last July 1 congratulated Hong Kong on the 20th anniversary of its return to China and its transformation from a British colony into the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and said, “According to China's tradition, a man enters adulthood at the age of 20, so today, we are celebrating the coming of age of the HKSAR.”

China's 'Sea Parade'
In his epic speech at the Communist Party congress last October, Xi Jinping, party leader and state president, announced the initiation of “a new stage in strengthening and revitalizing the armed forces.” By 2035, he promised, “the modernization of our national defense and our forces is basically completed” and “by the mid-21st century our people's armed forces have been fully transformed into world-class forces.”

Inter-Korean talks: Is a corner being turned?
High-level talks between North and South Korea today offer a potential for diplomacy - not threats of war - to reduce the increasingly tense standoff between Washington and Pyongyang, amid the latter's impressive success in developing its missiles and nuclear weaponry.

US security strategy: getting tougher on China
It is no secret that China and the United States compete around the world although, in certain areas, they cooperate. The newly released national security strategy of the United States, unveiling the Trump administration's thoughts of national security, focuses primarily on China as its top competitor.

Trump's China trip: Smiles hide harsh reality
President Xi Jinping gave Donald Trump unprecedented “state visit plus” treatment during the U.S. leader’s three-day visit to China, which was hailed as “successful and historic,” with a display of affability between the two men.

Can China be good development model?
China is basking in the interest that the whole world is taking in the 19th congress of its Communist Party and pondering the weighty speech delivered by General Secretary Xi Jinping, who was given the signal honor of having his name incorporated in the party constitution.

China's DNA: What's in it, war or peace?
The long-expected 19th Congress of the Communist Party of China will be held in Beijing next week and the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, is expected to emerge with an even tighter grip on the levers of power. The party constitution will be changed with the incorporation of his name into that document - something that has not happened since Deng Xiaoping’s death 20 years ago. The Chinese people will be exhorted to study the “thoughts” of the current leader, just as was the case with Mao from the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 until his death in 1976.

Antidote to Hong Kong independence
Advocates of Hong Kong independence are intolerable, Zhang Xiaoming said last week on his first day as director of the State Council’s Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office in Beijing. “What is Hong Kong independence?” he asked rhetorically while meeting the press. Answering his own question, he said: “It contravenes the Chinese constitution and Hong Kong’s Basic Law and ordinances, and could be criminal. It is a calamity for Hong Kong ... all Hongkongers should see this clearly and must not tolerate it.” This outpouring of the dangerous poison of separatism was triggered by the start of a new ...

In UN, China deflects criticism
Last week, China’s official People’s Daily published an essay by Foreign Minister Wang Yi praising China’s achievements in human rights ever since 'xi Jinping assumed power in 2012. “Only the person wearing the shoes can tell if the shoes are comfortable,” said Wang. “Only the Chinese people have the most say in China’s human rights situation. It’s the people’s choice. ” That sounds logical but, in reality, the Chinese people aren’t allowed any say. The government sees to it that Chinese NGOs play no role in Chinese human rights reports to the UN. In fact, it goes to great pains to prevent o...
