Portuguese referee, Olegario Benquerenca, has been appointed the chief referee at South Korea's final Group B game against Nigeria at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Tuesday (Wednesday at 3:30 a.m. in Korean Standard Time), the World Cup organizer FIFA said.
Bertino Miranda and Jose Cardinal, both from Portugal, have aso been named referee handling the competition.
Benquerenca, 41, played as chief referee at the Japan-Cameroon showdown in Group E at the current World Cup, following same role at the second round of the play-off of the Greek-Ukrainean match in the preliminaries.
He had other big game experience from handling qualifying games of the FIFA World Cup 2006 and Euro 2008 as well as from the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup, after gaining the international referee certificate in 2001. He ran as the first international referee at the A match in the friendly between Spain and Paraguay.
He was the referee who issued a yellow card to Miklos Feher in 2004 shortly before the player collapsed and died on the pitch.
한국-나이지리아전 심판 3명 모두 포르투갈人
한국의 원정 첫 16강 진출을 결정할 나이지리아전 주심으로 포르투갈 출신 올레가리우 벤케렌카 씨가 결정됐다.
21일 국제축구연맹(FIFA)은 23일 오전 3시 30분 더반 모저스마비다 경기장에서 열리는 한국-나이지리아전 심판으로 벤케렌카 주심을 비롯해 역시 포르투갈 출신인 조제 카르디날, 베르티누 미란다 씨(이상 부심)를 확정했다고 발표했다.
벤케렌카 주심은 E조 일본-카메룬전 주심을 맡은 바 있다. 2001년 국제 심판 자격을 얻은 그는 주로 유럽 무대에서 활동했다. 2002년 스페인-파라과이의 친선 경기에서 첫 A매치 심판을 맡았고 남아공 월드컵 예선에서는 그리스-우크라이나의 플레이오프 2차전 주심으로 나섰다.
