Diet pills containing human flesh confiscated by the government. |
Jeju police arrested Thursday two Chinese students who sold diet pills containing human flesh.
A woman surnamed Mo, 26, and Ahn, 21, who are both studying in Korea, bought 3,000 diet pills and 500 detox pills off a Chinese website, and smuggled those illegally, police said.
They paid 20,000 won for each bottle of 30 pills, then sold each bottle for 60,000 won. Some of the 80 customers bought more than one bottle.
The students netted 6 million won. Both told police they needed the money for tuition.
Jeju Maritime Police had the pills analyzed at the National Forensic Service, where the pills had a 100 percent positive match with human flesh.
They also contained sibutramine and phenolphthalein, both banned substances.
Sibutramine, which is known to cause cardiovascular diseases, has been banned since October, 2010. Phenolphthalein is also a banned import.
Jeju police plan to widen their investigation to track down similar offences.
