Korea Customs Service (KCS) is recruiting importers and exporters to test a blockchain-based customs clearance system, in a rare project applying the new technology to a state system despite uncertainties.
The KCS is building a blockchain-based customs data platform and has recruited testers ― five working groups and 50 companies on the exporting side and five working groups and 10 companies in Vietnam and Singapore on the importing side ― to test the system.
The primary goal is to test if the system could boost accuracy and transparency in issuing Certificates of Origin (C/O), an international electronic document used to verify exporters, importers, goods and other details, according to KCS officials.
If the test is successful, the KCS will apply the technology to other services.
The KCS will explain the test at Seoul Main Customs on Tuesday.
