LG CNS said Tuesday it will establish an e-library system in Uzbekistan.
The system integration service affiliate of LG Group said it has won a 13.5 billion won deal from Uzbekistan's Ministry of Development of Information Technologies and Communications to establish the National Educational Electric Library (NEEL). It also pledged to expand its cooperation with the Central Asian country in other e-government projects.
"We will be able to share our advanced information and communications technologies (ICT) with Uzbekistan by establishing the e-library system," said Lee Cheol, executive director of LG CNS Public Business Division, in a statement. "We plan to expand our business in the country by taking part in establishing e-government foundations such as the ICT-based education system, national data center and new airport system."
The NEEL project, which is to build a digital library management system for the Navoi National Library, has been one of the key policy projects of Uzbekistan President Islam Karimov. The project will be financed by Eximbank's Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF).
Under the deal, LG CNS said it will introduce a multimedia center, digitization center, e-library system and integrated library database. Once completed, 20 national libraries in Uzbekistan will be digitized and integrated to make their use more convenient, the company said.
For this project, LG CNS said it will work with small and medium-sized partners such as Futurenuri, which has library digitization technology.
Earlier in 2008, LG CNS established Korea's national digital library project and has since worked for Morocco's cybersecurity center, Mongolia's emergency rescue system and Colombia's ICT-based education system.
The company said it has won or been chosen as the preferred bidder in five e-government system deals this year in countries including Uzbekistan, Laos and Bahrain.
