The move comes as the nation's dominant fixed-line operator hopes to grab a leading position for the next-generation network system, as part of its bid to become the world's first 5G network operator.
The company said Thursday it invited 80 industry insiders _ including researchers and government officials _ to the unveiling of the core technologies and standards it plans to adopt for the global sports event.
"Our 5G standards came 18 months ahead of a planned announcement by the global telecommunications association 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP)," the company said.
"We have included almost all core technologies for the 5G standardization, which 3GPP is under discussion to include as well. That's why we are confident that we have taken an advantageous position before demonstrating our 5G capabilities in PyeongChang."
Oh Seong-mok, executive vice president of KT's network division, said: "We announced the 5G standardization to turn the upcoming winter games into the 5G Olympics."
The announced standards include technical specifications to interconnect 4G and 5G networks, according to the company.
