LG Uplus said Wednesday that its personal authentication technology that uses biometric data has been certified by a global standard.

The telecom company said it has acquired Fast Identity Online (FIDO) certification, an international standard for biometric authentication technologies, for its universal subscriber identity modules (USIM).

Consequently, now that all the company's personal authentication methods are certified by a global standard, it will be able to launch an integrated bio-authentication platform by August, aiming at strengthening the security of its fintech and Internet of Things (IoT) services.

"In the rapidly growing IoT service sector, a non-universal personal authentication system cannot accommodate all the differences in services and devices," said LG Uplus' e-Biz division head Son Jong-woo in a statement. "Our integrated personal authentication platform based on the FIDO standard will be the best answer for this with its secure and convenient functions."

LG Uplus also said it is in discussions with SK Telecom and KT to provide its FIDO-compliant personal authentication service universally. It said the three telecom companies plan to complete the integration by August.

LG Uplus said the FIDO-approved platform will provide all-in-one authentication and management functions on personal data such as device ownership and information, subscriber information and charge breakdown.

It said the platform will simplify personal authentication by integrating separate processes and freeing users from having to remember different account information and passwords.

On mobile devices, the FIDO-based platform, which currently supports face and fingerprint recognition, will be able to provide more diverse personal recognition technologies identifying users by iris, handwriting, voice and walking style, it said.
