LG Electronics said Wednesday that it has struck a broad patent cross-licensing deal with Google.

The licensing agreement will be effective through 2023, and covers technologies built on the two companies’ existing patents as well as those they file up to that year, said LG.

The collaboration calls for the Korean company to use mobile- and software-related patents owned by the U.S.-based Internet giant by paying an undisclosed amount of royalties.

In return, Google can use LG’s technologies for the expansion of its Android mobile ecosystem into emerging technologies such as virtualization and wearable devices.

Another deal was made to ensure that the two companies team up for the development and marketing of Google's upcoming wearable and mobile platforms on LG devices.

"We're pleased to enter into this agreement with a leading global technology company like LG," Google's Deputy General Counsel Allen Lo said in a statement.

LG said the collaboration will stave off patent lawsuits with Google.

"LG is interested in using Google's data-processing, wireless and mobile security patents for various connected devices such as wearables, tablets and for the Internet of Things," said an LG Electronics executive.

LG earlier partnered with Google to produce the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 smartphones, and the Korean company adopted Google's latest Android Wear platform for its G Watch R.
