Ambitious space travel missions declared
100 Year Starship to the Enterprise, set long-term goals By Kim Susan Se-jeong Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the moon in July 1967, but who will be the first to reach another star? Various nations and organizations are vying to be the next to make history. The 100 Year Starship project stated its plans to reach another star in the next century via their website, 100YSS. The mission’s leader is Mae Jemison, a former astronaut and the first African-American woman to travel to space. Jemison called the cross-generational mission “a journey across time and space.” Meanwhile, an ambitious “Star Trek” fan has also announced his plans for space exploration. According to the Daily Mail, May 14, the fan ‘Dan’ disclosed the blueprints of a starship, which is almost exactly the same as the Enterprise from Star Trek, on BuildTheEnterprise.org. Dan believes that the starship, double the height of New York’s World Trade Center in length, could be built in 20 years. Even if his plans do not come to fruition, Dan hopes his plans will inspire “The Next Generation,” wrote the Daily. If human space travel does extend beyond the moon, the next logical planet would be Mars. Mars has the highest possibility of having water. It also has a rotation cycle similar to Earth, approximately 24 hours and 41 minutes. However, the atmosphere consists of mostly carbon dioxide and the temperature has an extreme range from -125 degrees centigrade to 25 degrees. |
