Solar flare may disrupt wireless, fixed line communication
A large solar flare has caused disturbances in the Wthe Earth’s magnetic field, which may disrupt power grids and satellites, reported the Radio Research Agency Saturday, advising special caution.
A coronal mass ejection (CME) from solar sunspot 1261 is expected to affect electronic systems in satellites and on the ground, especially in polar regions, said the research center, warning of possible damage. For example, contact with embassies in other countries or shipments in high seas is rendered impossible when high-frequency (HF) and low-frequency (LF) communications are harmed. Global positioning systems would also be interrupted, causing problems in location information services and mobile communication stations. There have been no such damage or problems caused by the recent explosion, yet. It is still too early to relax. “Korea is located in a low latitude, which means expected damage will be unlikely to occur like in high-latitude regions,” said a source from the agency. “Special caution is needed because many sunspots are still active,” he added. |
