UFO spotted in Mexico? Only a meteor, experts say

A strange, orange-colored object soaring across the sky of Mexico has the Internet community intrigued about its origins.

The object, which was captured on video last month and surfaced recently, has twin trails of a bright orange flame emanating from its rear and apparently diving towards Earth. The video has racked up over 180,000 views on YouTube, a popular video-sharing service.

The unidentified object is gaining extra attention for a déjà-vu incident that occurred in faraway Greece. A similarly-shaped object was spotted in the Mediterranean country on the same day.

However, astronomical experts claim that it is probably a meteor burning up in the stratosphere, releasing a trail of debris in the process. Thousands of extraterrestrial rocks enter the Earth’s atmosphere every year, and most disintegrate due to atmospheric pressure.

지난달 29일(현지시간) 멕시코 상공에서 주황색 밝은 빛을 내는 거대한 불덩이가 목격된 사실이 뒤늦게 전해지면서 그 정체를 둘러싼 추측이 무성하게 나오고 있다.

멕시코 언론매체에 따르면 이날 저녁 7시께 중남부 모렐로스 주 쿠에르나바카 인근에 있던 시민 10여 명은 상공에서 밝은 빛을 내며 추락하는 괴물체를 목격했다.

이 영상은 유투브 등 동영상 공유 사이트에서 수만 건의 조회수를 기록하며 폭발적인 관심을 받았다. 특히 멕시코와 상당한 거리의 그리스에서도 같은날 일부 시민들이 비슷한 불덩이를 봤다는 증언이 나오자 이 비행체의 정체에 대한 추측은 무성하게 나왔다.

미확인비행체(UFO)를 추종하는 네티즌들은 이 물체를 두고 지구밖 생명체가 보낸 비행체(UFO)라고 강력하게 주장하고 있으나 일부 과학자들은 불덩이의 비행 궤도와운동 방향으로 미뤄 지구로 날아들던 운석이 대기권에순간적으로 연소되는 장면일 가능성이 높다고 설명하기도 했다.
