In the movie “Island,” as soon as the main character Lincoln 6-Echo wakes up, the central computer does a daily health checkup. Instead of having to go a long distance to a hospital and wait in a long line to consult a doctor, everything is done at home. While this may seem like a dream, many aspects that were featured in movies have been invented in real life and most are being widely used.

Recently, the University of California San Diego has developed ‘Underwear 2.0’―a type of high-tech men’s underwear that holds an electronic biosensor in the waistband. The sensors can monitor heart rate, blood pressure and other vital signs.

Healing fibers, which use the natural biorhythm and scent of a forest, are widely used to heal those who come in contact with the material. A calorie detecting fiber has gained popularity among those who are on a diet.

The invisibility cloak from “Harry Potter” movie series is no longer an imaginary item. In 2006, U.S. Duke University and a team of U.K. researchers jointly found a prototype of the material. Just three years later, scientists in Britain have demonstrated a flexible film that represents a big step towards in making this invisibility cloak a real item. The film contains tiny structures that together form a “metamaterial,” which can―among other tricks―manipulate light to make objects invisible.

The army is a competitive arena for making high-tech fibers. Suits of armor―or robotic exoskeletons―that can be seen in the movies “Iron Man” and “Minority Report” are in existence now. They were designed for the military to increase the strength, endurance and agility of soldiers in combat.

All of these fibers are products that combine digital hardware technology and software applications. If one wears a military uniform made out of digital fibers, they may be able to share incoming information collected from satellites or from headquarters. MIT is currently developing an army suit that can make the person wearing it stronger than ever. This will be made possible through the artificial muscles that are set into the armor.

“The smart textiles market is growing due to the increase in value of such fibers,” said an official in the textile industry. “Domestic companies are constantly looking for ways to bring together IT skills and fibers.”



영화 속 특수섬유가 현실에…

영화 '아일랜드'의 주인공 링컨 6-에코가 잠에서 깨자마자 중앙 컴퓨터가 오늘의 건강 상태를 점검해준다. 건강검진을 받으러 멀리 떨어진 병원에 가서 오랜 시간 기다릴 필요가 없다. 꿈만 같은 이야기지만 이미 현실에서 개발돼 상용화까지 되고 있다.

최 근 캘리포니아 주립대학은 인체의 변화를 점검할 수 있는 '언더웨어 2.0' 개발에 성공했다. 자연의 리듬과 향기를 함유한 삼림용 섬유 등을 이용해 치유 효과를 가진 힐링(healing)섬유는 이미 상용화된 상태다. 이밖에 칼로리 소모량을 측정해 다이어트를 도와주는 다이어트 섬유도 나왔다.

영화 '해리포터'에 나오는 투명망토도 현실에 구현되고 있다. 미국 듀크대와 영국의 공동 연구팀은 지난 2006년 프로토타입에 이어 2009년에는 한 단계 발전한 형태의 메타물질 개발에 성공했다. 구리 원소로 둘러싸인 10개의 유리섬유 고리로 구성된 메타물질은 물체에서 가시광선이나 마이크로파가 반사되는 것을 차단해준다. 우리는 물체에서 반사되는 가시광선 등을 통해 물체를 인식하기 때문에 이를 차단하면 보이지 않는 상태가 될 수 있다. 이 물질로 옷을 만들 수 있게 된다면 투명망토도 영화 속 이야기만은 아니다.

군대는 첨단 섬유의 경연장이다. 영화 '아이언맨'이나 '마이너리티리포트'에 나오는 전투용 전자섬유는 이미 개발까지 끝나 실전에 배치되고 있다.

이 들 영화에 나오는 섬유는 섬유에 디지털 하드웨어 기술과 소프트웨어 응용기술을 합친 것이다. 디지털 섬유로 만든 군복을 입으면 인공위성이나 본부로부터 들어오는 정보도 공유할 수 있다. 미국 MIT에서는 입으면 힘이 세지는 군복도 개발하고 있다. 군복에 인공 근육을 내장해 힘을 강화시켜주는 것이다.

불이 붙어도 멀쩡한 섬유도 있다. 열에 강한 아라미드 섬유는 500℃가 넘어야 비로소 타기 시작한다. 강한 내열성 덕분에 소방관들이 입는 소방복에도 사용되고 있다. 영화 '판타스틱4'의 불의 초능력자 자니 스톰도 불가능한 일만은 아니다. 섬유업계 관계자는 “갈수록 고부가가치를 창출할 수 있는 스마트 섬유 시장이 커지고 있다. 국내 업체들도 IT 등 우리가 앞서 있는 분야와 섬유를 접목시키는 방법을 꾸준히 찾고 있는 중”이라고 말했다.
