Solar storms could have ‘devastating effects’ on human technology when they hit a peak in two year’s time, a leading scientist has warned.

“The storms pose a growing threat to critical infrastructure such as satellite communications, navigation systems and electrical transmission equipment,” said U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration assistant secretary Kathryn Sullivan.

In February, astronomers warned that mankind is now more vulnerable to such an event than at any time in history and that the planet should prepare for a global Hurricane Katrina-style disaster.

A massive eruption of the sun would save waves of radiation and charged particles to Earth, damaging the satellite systems used for synchronizing computers, airline navigation and phone networks.

“If the storm is powerful enough it could even crash stock markets and cause power cuts that last weeks or months,” experts told the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

2013년 거대한 태양폭풍이 발생해 지구가 큰 피해를 입을 수 있다는 우려 섞인 전망이 속속 나오고 있다.

미국 과학진흥협회(AAAS) 연구진은 최근 “2013년 역대 최악의 태양 전자기 폭풍으로 ‘지구촌 카트리나’가 발생할 수 있으며, 지구 곳곳에 몇 주 혹은 몇 달 간의 정전 사태가 일어날 수도 있다”고 경고했다.

2005년 발생한 허리케인 카트리나는 2500명이 넘는 인명피해를 낸 재난. ‘지구촌 카트리나’로 비유되는 2013년 태양폭풍이 전 세계 곳곳에서 전자장 장애 및 피해를 일으킬 수 있다는 걱정을 불러일으키고 있는 것이다.

실 제로 지난주 발생한 태양폭풍으로 전 세계 일부 지역에서 단파 통신장애가 발생했으며, 일부 항공기는 항로를 변경해야 했다. 특히 지난 15일에 발생한 태양폭풍은 최근 4년 간 가장 위력적인 폭발이었기에 더욱 위기감을 불러일으켰다.

영국 정부 과학자문위원 존 베딩턴 교수 역시 “2013년 생성된 태양폭풍은 통신위성 전자기기 GPS장비에 최대 2조달러(약 2300조원) 피해를 입힐 수 있다.”면서 “통신 위성들이 작동이 중단되거나 부품들이 영구 파손될 수 있으며, 지상에서는 강력한 자기변동으로 전선에 과부하가 걸릴 수 있다.”고 내다봤다.
