A research team has found the world’s biggest ever spider fossil, Monster Spider, encased in volcanic ash, in Inner Mongolia, the science magazine Biology Letters reported Wednesday.

The study shows that it is a female which lived during the mid-Jurassic period 165 million years ago.

"She is the largest known fossil spider," said Professor Paul Selden from the University of Kansas. "Her 2.5 centimeter-long body is not the biggest, but if you add in her long legs, over 6.3cm, then she's the largest, 15cm in total."

"This female spider, long leg with relatively short body, is much bigger than previous male Nephilid," said the palaeontologist from the university. "It is an example of extreme sexual dimorphism (systematic difference in form between individuals of different sex in the same species). We are keen to see if that was also true of the ancient Nephila."

Meanwhile, Golden Orb Weaver has big difference in size depending on gender. Male is 6-10mm long, while length of female spans 20-30mm. It used to catch little birds using long legs to weave web near human dwellings or on branches of trees.



세계 최대 크기 ‘괴물 거미’ 화석 찾았다

역대 가장 거대한 크기를 자랑하는 고대 거미의 화석이 발견돼 학계의 주목을 받고 있다.

미국 캔저스 대학 폴 셀든 교수가 이끄는 연구진이 내몽골 화산재 퇴적지역에서 발견한 고대 거미 화석이 세계 최대 크기란 사실을 확인했다고 과학전문지 ‘바이올로지 레터스’(Biology Letters)에 발표했다.

남다른 크기 때문에 ‘괴물 거미’란 별명을 얻은 이 거미의 학명은 네필라 쥐라시카(Nephila jurassica). 연구결과 1억 6,500만 년 전 중생대 쥐라기 시대에 서식했던 암컷으로 밝혀졌다.

연구진에 따르면 이 거미의 몸 폭은 2.5cm에 불과하지만 다리 하나당 길이가 6.3cm가 넘어 몸길이는 총 15cm가 넘는 것으로 추정된다. 현존하는 거대한 크기의 무당거미(Golden Orb Weaver)와 같은 거미과다.

셀든 교수는 “몸통에 비해서 다리길이가 훨씬 긴 이 거미는 이전에 스페인에서 발견된 수컷 종 보다 몸길이가 훨씬 컸다.”고 설명하면서 “현대의 거미처럼 고대 거미들도 성별에 따라 크기와 형태가 다른 동종이형 이었는지를 조사할 계획”이라고 밝혔다.

한편 네필라 쥐라시카와 같은 거미과인 무당거미는 평균 몸길이가 수컷은 6∼10㎜인 반면 암컷은 몸길이가 20∼30㎜에 달할 정도로 차이가 크다. 인가 근처나 초원의 나뭇가지에 입체그물을 만들며 긴 다리를 이용해 거미줄에 잡힌 작은 새를 잡는 모습이 종종 포착된다.
