Laser weapons appearing in science fiction films may be used in real life in the near future.

The U.S Navy is reported to have successfully test-fired a high-energy laser weapon on April 6.

U.S. monthly magazine Wired reported in its Internet edition that the Navy demonstrated the weapon in collaboration with engineers of the Department of Defense in waters near the San Nicholas Island off the central coast of California despite bad weather and high waves.

The engineers accurately aimed a solid state laser at the engine of a boat some 1.6 kilometers away from the deck of a Spruance-class destroyer under the guidance of an electronic detector and navigation system. The boat was in flames seconds after a flash of light.

The high-energy laser weapon is expected to be used to assault smaller ships such as pirate boats at short range, the magazine said.

와이어디 등 미 언론 보도에 따르면 캘리포니아 연안 산 니콜라스 섬 부근에서 실시된 이번 레이저 무기 실험은 미 해군과 국방부 기술팀이 공동 기획한 것으로 날씨와 파도의 영향을 많이 받는 해상에서는 처음 실시된 것이라고. 실험에 사용된 고체 레이저 장비는 스프루언스급 테스트 함정 갑판에 설치, 전파탐지기 및 네비게이션 시스템과 연계 작동하여 목표물을 조준하는 데 성공하였다. 목표물은 테스트 함정에서 약 1.6km 떨어진 소형 보트의 엔진부. 엔진부에 몇 초간 레이저 공격을 받은 이 보트는 불꽃 발생과 함께 화재가 진행되어 운행에 치명적 손상을 입게 되었다.

이번 실험으로 해상에서의 유용성이 입증된 고에너지 레이저 무기는 해적선처럼 비교적 근거리에서 대적해야 하는 소형 선박 공격에 이용될 예정이라고.
