Hottest planet of 3,200C discovered



A planet discovered for the first time last year is the hottest ever found, scientists have revealed, according to Daily Mail in London Thursday.

The gaseous surface of WASP-33b is a record-breaking 3,200C.

The exoplanet's scorching temperature is explained by its close orbit around its star, itself one of the hottest planet-hosting stars at 7,160C.

It is 380 light-years away in the constellation of Andromeda.

Scientists were first alerted to WASP-33b's existence in 2006, after observing regularly timed dimmings of its parent star.

This was caused by the planet, four-and-a-half times the size of Jupiter, orbiting its star at less than 7 percent the distance of Mercury from the sun.

This is not to be scoffed at considering the star's temperature of 7,160C dwarfs the sun's 5,600C.

WASP-33b completes an orbit every 29.5 hours.

A study led by Alexis Smith of Keele University in Staffordshire, and reported in New Scientist, discovered WASP-33b's thermal emission using an infrared camera on the William Herschel Telescope in the Canary Islands.

Its temperature is 900C hotter than what was formerly the hottest known planet in the Milky Way Galaxy.

Scientists believe that planet, called WASP-12b and which lies 600 light-years away from Earth, may only have another 10 million years left before it is completely devoured.

The planet is so close to its sun-like star that it is superheated to 2,300C and stretched into a football shape by enormous tidal forces. It completes an orbit every 1.1 days.

WASP-12 is a yellow dwarf star located in the winter constellation Auriga. The exoplanet was discovered by British scientists at Wide Area Search for Planets (WASP) in 2008.

천문관측 이래 우주에서 가장 뜨거운 행성이 발견됐다. 27일 영국 일간지 데일리메일은 세인트 앤드류 대학교 연구팀이 지금까지 발견된 행성 중에서 가장 온도가 높은 행성을 발견했다고 전했다.

과학자들이 밝힌 이 행성의 온도는 대략 3200도. 이 행성은 지난해 처음으로 발견됐으며 주인행성은 7160도인 것으로 추정되고 있다. 태양의 표면온도가 5600도임을 감안하면 엄청난 에너지를 갖고 있는 것이다.

지구로부터 380광년 떨어진 안드로메다 별자리에 위치한 행성은 이전 은하수 은하에서 발견된 가장 뜨거운 행성보다 900도가 더 높다.

과학자들은 지구로부터 600광년 떨어진 곳에 이 행성보다 더 뜨거운 행성이 있을 것이라고 추정하지만 아직 천체 망원경으로 관측되지는 않았다.

스페인과 남아프리카공화국에 설치된 우주 천체 만원경을 통해 지구에서 관측되는 통과 행성들이 주인행성 앞을 지나가는 모습을 관측하던 중 이 같은 결과를 얻었다고 보도했다.
