Tiny insect fights off bigger bee with wrestling move

The tiny insect looks as though it could easily be overpowered by its much bigger foe. But showing off its awesome strength, the ant clutches the bee's wing in its powerful jaw — and looks as though it wants to slam its enemy on to a branch. Snapper Syuwandie Lie captured the scrap on a rambutan tree on Bangka Island, Indonesia, The Sun newspaper reported Wednesday.

He said: "When I found the bee, it was already in agony and being held above the ant's head.

"I have no idea where the ant got the bee from. It looks like the ant is about to throw the bee."

The insects can lift more than 20 times their own body weight, the report said.

And this little specimen is so strong he should really be named the Hulk Hog-ant, the newspaper said.

꿀벌 들어올린 ‘헐크’ 개미

영국 대중지 더 선 등 외신은 25일 최근 인도네시아 방카섬에서 촬영된 꿀벌과 ‘레슬링’을 하듯 몸싸움 끝에 승리한 ‘헐크’ 개미 사진을 소개했다고 나우뉴스가 보도했다.

공개된 사진에서 불개미로 보이는 한 작은 곤충이 앞턱으로 자신보다 큰 꿀벌의 날개를 물어 들어 올리고 있어 마치 레슬링의 한 기술을 보여주는 듯하다고 보도는 전했다.

이 같은 장면을 촬영한 인도네시아 자카르라의 사진작가 슈웬디 라이(40)는 “꿀벌을 발견했을 때 그 곤충은 이미 개미의 머리 위로 들어 올려져 고통스러워 하고 있었다.”고 말했다는 것.

이어 그는 “개미가 꿀벌을 어디로 들고 가려는지 알지 못했다. 마치 나뭇가지 위에서 던져버리려는 듯했다.”고 덧붙였다.

이 개미과 곤충은 자신의 몸무게보다 20배 이상 무거운 먹이를 쉽게 들어 올릴 수 있다고 알려졌다. 더 선은 “이 작은 동물은 너무 강력하므로 헐크 호갠트(헐크 호간과 개미의 영문명을 합친 말)로 불려야 할 것”이라고 평했다.
