Evolution of NFC tech, “texting smartphone keys to visitors”
An office worker received a call from his mother living in Gwangju one weekend. His mother said, “I am in front of the door of your apartment.” In a ski resort, he sent a temporary certified numbers via smartphone to his mother, making her to open the door of his apartment in Seoul. Such unlocking is likely to be prevalent in one to two years, according to experts. These are possible with the high tech called the near field communication (NFC), a set of standards for smartphones to establish radio communication with each other by touching them together or bringing them into close proximity, usually no more than a few centimeters. NFC has been synthesized with communications network and cloud computing. The network system will read information given by the tag when a smartphone is nearby and allow access to security, banking and etc. However, because NFC is going through the early stages of development, the information coded in the tag won’t be altered depending on the users’ taste yet. However, when the system of communications network and cloud computing is fully applied, NFC will confront opening up of brand-new services and techniques. “After the machine has been connected to the communication network, NFC will make new achievements such as encoding a temporary smartphone door lock to unexpected visitors that can be used for three to five days,” an official of KT said. KT is advancing to introduce ‘Networked NFC’ meaning NFC technique joined together with communication network. The networked NFC is expected to not only change the door locks in buildings but also rent car industries. Consumers of KT Keumho Rent-a-Car will be able to rent cars using mobile application. If the person holds the smartphone key next to the car, the door will open. “Coffee houses can overcome the limits of posting the same advertisements and coupons on NFC tags by inserting more information in the cloud that can be switched day-by-day. It will be an excellent marketing tool.” Forrester Research, a market investigation institution, has estimated that NFC tag market will undergo significant growth of $29 8 million in five years. The evolving technique is anticipated to be used in hotels, healthclubs, golf links, lockers, rentals and etc. |
