A recent study suggests that a partner’s sudden decision to lose weight may indicate an imminent end to the relationship. He or she may be looking for a new partner.

Researchers at Heidelberg University in Germany studied some 2,000 people between the ages of 16 and 55 in an investigation about the relationship between one’s weight and happiness.

According to the research, people in steady relationships do not watch their figure as much because they are less concerned about looking attractive to others. Those looking for prospective partners, on the other hand, are diligent about controlling their weight.

Data showed that happily coupled people weigh more on average than singles

A U.S. study had also reported that couples tend to gain weight from high calorie intake from dining out and less gym time.

While a new diet may be motivated by many things including health concerns regardless of relationship status, the Heidelberg research group reported seductive intentions had a significant bearing on weight control.
