Punch-hole clouds, sign of circling of UFO?

Mysterious clouds were spotted like what seems to be the sign by an unidentified flying object (UFO) when it moved vertically into the sky, according to the Daily Mail in London.

On Jan. 7, IT technician Wesley Tyler was running out to his car for a computer part when he noticed three nearly identical, UFO-like cloud formations in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The phenomenon continued for 45 minutes. He took their pictures and put them on his Facebook.

They sparked hot online discussions linking the features to everything from the passage of UFO to recent mass bird deaths to secret military experiments. But scientists claimed that they are simply a general atmospheric phenomenon of punch-hole clouds.

Hole-punch clouds are miniature snowstorms that can occur in thin, subfreezing cloud layers.

It is highly probable that when airplanes ascend into this type of cloud, the rearward force created by propellers or by air forced over wings causes air to expand. This expansion can cool a vaguely circular section of the cloud to the point where many of the water droplets freeze and ice crystals form, according to a June hole-punch cloud study co-authored by Heymsfield in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society.

Tyler, the photographer, was skeptical of the airplane explanation, due to the sheer number and close proximity of the cloud formations.

"I've scoured the Internet and have yet to find more than one hole-punch cloud in a single frame," he said. Myrtle Beach International, he added, is "not that busy an airport." And, he said, "I've read that these clouds form at 6,100 meters, and these clouds looked like they were right above us.

Meanwhile, similar punch-hole clouds appeared above Moscow in October, 2009. Some news media made a stir, reporting that “UFO is circling in the sky above Moscow.”

'구멍 뚫린 하늘' UFO 선회흔적 논란

미확인비행물체(UFO)가 수직으로 이동해 흔적을 남긴 것처럼 보이는 신비로운 구름이 포착된 가운데 이 자연현상의 원인을 두고 의견이 엇갈리고 있다.

미국 사우스캐롤라이나 주 머틀비치에 사는 IT개발자 웨슬리 타일러는 지난달 11일(현지시간) 퇴근길에 거대한 구멍이 3개가 뚜렷하게 난 구름을 보고 깜짝 놀라서 차를 세웠다. 특이한 현상은 45분이나 지속됐고, 그는 사진을 찍어 페이스북에 올렸다.

인터넷에서 이 사진은 뜨거운 화제를 모았다. 일부 네티즌은 구름의 모습을 두고 UFO가 지나간 흔적 혹은 비밀 군사훈련의 증거라고 주장했다. 하지만 과학자들은 이는 일반적인 기상현상 홀펀치 구름(Punch-hole clouds)에 불과하다고 선을 그었다.

홀펀치 구름이란 얇은 구름층 사이에 얼음조각이 형성돼 무게를 이기지 못하고 하강하면서 주변의 수증기를 흡수해 구멍이 뚫린 것처럼 보이는 현상이다. 구름 위를 지나가는 비행기의 프로펠러나 날개 움직임으로 주변 공기가 냉각될 경우 생성될 가능성이 더욱 높은 것으로 전해졌다.

이 같은 과학적 설명에도 일부는 "구름의 높이가 너무 낮기 때문에 홀펀치 구름일 가능성이 적을 뿐 아니라 구멍이 3개나 동시에 나는 건 확률상 희박하다."고 의심의 눈초리를 거두지 않았다.

한편 2009년 10월 러시아 모스크바 상공에 홀펀치 구름현상이 목격되자 일부 언론매체가 이를 두고 "UFO가 모스크바 상공을 선회하고 있다."고 전하는 등 소동이 인 바 있다.
