Korea beats Britain in shootout to reach men's football semis
Korea defeated Britain 5-4 in a penalty shootout to reach the semifinals in the men's football tournament at the London Olympics.
At Millennium Stadium, Korean goalkeeper Lee Bum-young denied Daniel Sturridge, Britain's fifth shooter, and Ki Sung-yueng converted his shot past Jack Butland to clinch the victory. Korea is in the Olympic football semis for the first time. It will face Brazil at Old Trafford in Manchester, home of the Premier League giants Manchester United. The teams tied the regulation and extra time at 1-1. Ji Dong-won opened the scoring in the 29th minute before Aaron Ramsey knotted the score with a penalty in the 36th. Ramsey had his second penalty chance just four minutes later, but South Korean keeper Jung Sung-ryong turned away the low shot to his left. Lee replaced Jung midway through the second half and came up huge in the shootout. Each of the first four shooters for both sides scored, before Lee made a diving save on Sturridge. Korea is seeking its first Olympic football medal in its ninth try. (CARDIFF, Britain=Yonhap) |
