Kenyan Kiplagat wins women’s marathon

DAEGU - In the women’s marathon, the first event of the Daegu world athletics, Kenya swept the podium with Edna Kiplagat snateched the gold medal with a time of two hours 28 minutes 43 seconds, Saturday.

Her teammate Priscah Jeptoo was 17 seconds behind of winner and Sharon Jemutai clocked at 2:29:14.

The 2010 New York Marathon winner fell down in the second-to-last water station by herself crossing in front of Jemutai but she overcame it.

“This is my first championship I have run and I am happy to have won it,” Kiplagat said. “I hought that if I could run the race like I did in my last two marathons, I succeed. I didn’t have special strategy, I just tried to speed up at the 32 kilometers,” added Kiplagat.

Until the 25-kilometer mark of the course, there were 26 runners in the leading pack.

But the three Kenyan runners led by Kiplagat started their move making the distance from the back before the two-hour-run mark.

At the field, the first shocking news surrounded the stadium as Steve Hooker defending champion of the men’s pole vault failed to move next round.

In the preliminary, Hooker attempted at 5.50 meters but he just spent all three chances without a single success.

“I felt a lot of pressure before the competition, so now it is gone,” Hooker said. “It is a good opportunity for me to look forward to the next year. Practically, thi is the end of season for me and I will have a rest,” added Hooker.

In the women’s 10,000 meters at night, Kenyans again dominated the race.

Vivian Cheruiyot of Kenya marked her season best record of 30:48.98 and her teammates Sally Kipyego and Linet Masai brought the silver and bronze medal to their country with a time of 30:50.04 and 30:53.59

During Day 1, only Kenya earned medals among 202 participating countries.

Meanwhile, Korean expecting sprinter Kim Kuk-young couldn’t taste to run at the worlds as he disqualified in the preliminary round due to false start.

From this world championships when the athlete makes false start, the runner is disqualified directly.

케냐 女마라톤서 금·은·동 싹쓸이

케냐의 여자 철각 에드나 키플라갓(32)이 제13회 대구 세계육상선수권대회에서 첫 금메달의 주인공이 됐다.

키플라갓은 대회 개막일인 27일 오전 대구 시내를 도는 42.195㎞ 풀코스에서 치러진 여자 마라톤 결승에서 2시간28분43초의 기록으로 가장 먼저 결승선을 끊었다.

이번 대회에 참가한 55명의 선수 중 개인 기록이 2시간20분46초로 가장 좋은 키플라갓은 시작부터 선두권을 형성하다가 35㎞ 지점부터 앞으로 치고 나섰다.

이어 40㎞ 이후부터는 독주를 펼친 끝에 여유 있게 월계관을 썼다.

지난해 뉴욕 마라톤에서 우승하고 올해 런던마라톤에서 3위를 차지한 키플라갓은 5번째 마라톤 완주 만에 세계 정상에 오르며 최고의 순간을 만끽했다.

프리스카 제프투(27·2시간29분00초)와 샤론 체로프(27·2시간29분14초)가 은메달과 동메달을 따내 케냐 철각 삼총사가 1~3위를 휩쓸었다.

케냐는 출전 선수 상위 세 명의 기록을 합산해 순위를 매기는 단체전(번외경기)에서도 우승, 2관왕을 달성했다.

중장거리 왕국 케냐가 세계선수권대회에서 한 종목에 걸린 메달을 싹쓸이하기는 남자 3,000ｍ 장애물(1997년·2007년)에 이어 여자 마라톤이 두 번째다.

이번 대회 마라톤 코스는 국채보상운동공원을 출발해 청구네거리~수성네거리~두산오거리~수성못~대구은행네거리~반월당네거리를 돌아 다시 출발점으로 오는 15㎞ 구간을 두 번 왕복하고, 같은 구간을 단축해 마지막 12.195㎞를 달려 순위를 가리는 변형 루프(순환) 코스로 설계됐다.

오전 9시 정각 출발 총성과 함께 지구촌 최고의 여자 철각들이 일제히 출발선을 박차고 나갔다. (연합뉴스)
