Both North and South Koreans share similar view on the 21-year-old South Korean swimmer Park Tae-hwan’s great achievement at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games.
On Wednesday, the North Korean diving team was spurring on their training in the Aoti Aquatics Center. Jo Keum-san, coach of the North’s team, asked after Lee Jong-hee, the South team coach who participated in the 1990 Beijing Asian Games with him. Although the two Koreas are rival , he highly praised Park as a compatriot. “Park was splendid as a Korean.”
Freestyle has long been a high wall for Asians to climb over. Park’s gold in freestyle at the 2008 Beijing Olympics was the first one in 72 years after a Japanese swimmer set the record at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Continuing his previous momentum, Park set another prominent record this year.
This must have been something in the eyes of North Korean swim coach as well. “I believe all North Korean swimmers are aware of him (Park),” said Jo. “It’s sad the swimmers in my country quit on the verge of making an accomplishment.”
He further added with a smile, “I have enjoyed watching Park’s games.”
북한코치 “박태환, 조선사람인데 정말 대단”
박태환(21•단국대)을 보는 시선은 남이나, 북이나 다를 것이 없다. 수영을 조금만 아는 사람이라면…. 17일 광저우아오틱아쿠아틱센터에서는 북한다이빙대표팀이 훈련을 하고 있었다. 조금산 코치는 1990베이징아시안게임에 함께 출전했던 한국다이빙대표팀 이종희 코치의 안부부터 물었다.
북한은 이번 아시안게임에서 ‘최강’ 중국에 이어 한국, 일본 등과 다이빙 2인자 자리를 놓고 겨룰 것으로 예상된다. “탄성판(스프링보드)”, “고정판(플랫폼)” 등 수영용어는 달랐지만, 박태환에 대해 묻자 “대단하다”는 공감대가 금세 만들어졌다.
자유형은 아시아인들에게는 넘을 수 없는 벽이었다. 박태환의 2008베이징올림픽 금메달은 1936베를린올림픽 자유형 1500m에서 데라다 노보루(일본)가 금메달을 딴 이후 72년 만에 나온 것이었다.
그리고 2010광저우아시안게임에서도 세계최고의 실력을 유감없이 보여줬다. 북한 수영인의 눈에도 놀라운 것은 당연했다. 조 코치는 “아마 이곳(북한)에서도 경영선수들을 다 (박태환을) 알 것”이라면서 “우리는 조금 ‘물을 뚫을 만하면’ 그만 둔다”며 아쉬움을 표현했다. 이어 “나도 박태환의 경기를 지켜보고 있다.”며 웃었다.
