South Korea failed to advance to the final of the FIFA U-20 Womens World Cup as it was defeated by the hosts 1-5 in the semi-final match in Germany Thursday.
Consequently, Korea will compete with Colombia, which lost to Nigeria 0-1 in another semi-final on the same day, for the third post, shortly before Germany plays Nigeria for the title, on Sunday.
Striker Ji So-yon saved the face of Korea in the Thursday game, as she scored her teams only goal at the Bochum Stadium. Ji shot the ball into the right corner of the net into the 19th minute of the second half, breaking through tight defense of three German women in the goal area. But the score was still far distance of 1-4 to the Korean ladies.
In three minutes later, German forward Alexandra Popp added another goal for her team to humiliate South Korea 5-1. She scored her first goal of the match in the fifth minute into the second half.
Forward Svenja Huth netted the opening goal for her country in the 13th minute after slipping through the Korean defense.
In the 26th minute, mid-fielder Kim Kulig strongly grounded the ball from the center of the arc area with no defense into the net after grazing goalkeeper Moon So-ri. Kulig scored her second goal into the eighth minute of the second half, making the score 4-0.
Korean women are satisfied enough with their advance to the semi-final match in the World Cup, said an official of the Korean Football Association.
They are the first Koreans to have advanced to the semi-finals in the World Cup football, in disregard of sex and age.
