Suwon BlueWings manager Cha Bum-kun announced Thursday he will step down from his position amid the club's dismal league performance this season.
"I will be in charge until June 6, and then will take a break," Cha said in a press conference in Seoul.
Cha, who was a football commentator for the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, said he would not repeat that role for the upcoming event.
"Managing and commentating requires an awful lot of energy and concentration. I feel worn out. Right now I am not really sure if I could do the job well," Cha said.
A former Bundesliga star striker, Cha, 56, took the helm at Suwon in 2004, and was at the center of the club's glory when it claimed the K-League championship in 2004 and 2008. In 2008, he capped his coaching career by winning the league cup as well.
He also saw Suwon win the FA Cup last year, and his side is currently in the quarterfinals of the 2010 AFC Champions League.
Suwon's faltering form in the K-League, however, raised suspicions of whether he would last at the club.
Last season the team slumped to 10th place out of 15, and the nightmarish run has continued this year as it now is bottom of the standings with a 2-1-8 record.
Amid such poor form, anguished BlueWing supporters have started to call for Cha's resignation from the stands. In response, Cha earlier mentioned that he might make up his mind to stand down, following a 2-1 loss to Gangwon FC late last month.
"I still believe Suwon has a chance to make the playoffs among the top six teams, and win another league trophy," Cha said. "I hope to have a great time with my boys until the last day. I really appreciate all the fans and staff, who gave me so much support.
"I will think about what to do next during my big break, including going abroad to study."
Suwon officials said that they respect Cha's decision and will try to find a new manager as soon as possible.
