Seven players have applied to enter the second Korean Basketball League (KBL) ethnic Korean draft, the league announced Wednesday.
The seven players will take part in a tryout and draft on Feb. 2 and 3. Teams will be looking for the next Moon Tae-young of the LG Sakers or Jun Tae-poong of the KCC Egis, who were taken in the first draft a year ago and have made an impact on the league this season.
Among the most highly-touted of the seven is 2.04-meter Joseph Fontenot, who was an all-state player in Maryland when he was in high school and went on to play at Connors State College, but has yet to play professionally.
I want to be evaluated based on my abilities, not my experience, the 21-year-old said
The Ulsan Mobis, Dongbu Promy, ET Land Elephants, SK Knights and Daegu Orions didnt select a player in last years ethnic Korean draft and will be eligible to make a pick this year.
All have expressed interest in Fontenot, however, many believe Jarod Stevenson, the older brother of Moon Tae-young, is the best player available.
Stevenson wasnt at the orientation session in Seoul Wednesday because hes playing in Serbias top basketball league this year. Stevenson is bigger than his brother and hes said to be more advanced as well; Moon is currently leading the KBL in points per game.
Stevenson has played in Russia, Spain and Greece but the knock on him is his age; hell be 36 when he plays his first game in the KBL.
Among the others who have entered the draft, Anthony Galloway is back again after not being selected last season. Park Wayne Cleveland, Andrew Estebo, Ronald Tinsley and Mark Warrington round out the list.
Galloway is the only other player with professional experience, playing in a couple of minor pro leagues in the United States in 2008 and 2009.
