Yu-na Happy With Short Program Draw

Reigning world champion and strong Olympic gold medal favorite Kim Yu-na said Sunday that she is happy with the position she drew in the women's figure skating short program event, Yonhap News Agency reported.

Kim was drawn in the fifth group with Finland's Laura Lepisto, Russia's Alena Leonova, and Japan's Mao Asada and Akiko Suzuki. She will skate third after Lepisto and Asada in the short program Tuesday.

She picked number 23 in the draw held in the press conference room of the Pacific Coliseum skating rink and is to skate 23rd among the 30-women skaters who were divided into six groups.

"I'm pretty satisfied with the draw. I was drawn to skate in a good order ― not too early or not too late," Kim was quoted as saying after attending the draw.

"I was hoping not to skate last in a group. It would have been even better if I was drawn to skate first in my group."

The 19-year-old skater, dubbed "Queen Yu-na" in South Korea, is gearing up to become the first South Korean to win gold in the figure skating event.

Her teammate Kwak Min-jung has been sorted into the second group to skate ninth after Russian Ksenia Makarova.

Kim expressed her condolences to Canadian Joannie Rochette on the death of her mother. Her mother Therese Rochette died of heart attack Sunday morning and Joannie missed the draw.

"I heard it when I arrived in the rink. I want to offer my condolence to Joannie. I hope she could resume her practice soon," said Kim.

김연아 쇼트프로그램 조추첨 만족

'피겨퀸' 김연아 (20.고려대)가 2010 밴쿠버 동계올림픽 피겨 여자 싱글 쇼트프로그램에서 5조 세 번째 순서로 연기를 펼치게 된 것에 대해 만족감을 표시했다.

김연아는 쇼트프로그램에서 총 6개조(30명) 가운데 5조에 속해 라우라 레피스토(핀란드)와 아사다에 이어 세 번째 연기자로 출전하고, 그 이후로 스즈키 아키코(일본)와 알레나 레오노바(러시아)가 출전한다.

김연아는 23번을 뽑아서 5조 세 번째 연기자가 됐고, 아사다는 22번을 골라서 김연아 직전에 연기를 펼치게 됐다.

김연아는 22일(한국시간) 캐나다 밴쿠버 퍼시픽 콜리세움에서 치러진 공식 연습을 끝내고 믹스트존에서 취재진과 잠시 만나 "연기 순서 추첨 결과가 괜찮게 됐다. 딱 적당한 순서에서 연기하게 됐다"라고 소감을 밝혔다.

그녀는 "어느 그룹에 포함되든지 마지막 순서만 피하려고 했다"라며 "한 가지 아쉬운 점이라면 5조 첫 번째 연기자로 뽑혔으면 더 좋았을 텐데 그러지 못했다"라고 웃음을 지었다.

김연아와 함께 한국을 대표해서 출전한 곽민정은 2조의 네 번째 순서로 연기하게 되자 "3조 정도에 편성됐으면 좋을 뻔했는데 그나마 1조가 아니라서 다행"이라며 "1조에 편성되면 연습시간이 새벽에 배정돼 피곤하다"라고 설명했다.

김연아는 믹스트존 인터뷰에서 이날 어머니의 사망으로 충격에 빠진 조애니 로셰트 (캐나다)에 대해 "아침에 훈련장에 도착해서 소식을 전해들었다"며 "조애니에게 위로의 말을 전하고 싶다. 빨리 훈련에 복귀했으면 좋겠다"라고 애도의 뜻을 전했다.
