Chang Jung-koo will become the first Korean to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF).
The Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) announced on its Web site that the Korean WBC junior flyweight champion, known as the "Korean Hawk," is among the 13 inductees for the class of 2009.
The Busan native's career in the ring spanned from 1980 to 1991, and he held the title for over five years, from March 26, 1983 until June 27, 1988, defending his title 15 times. Over his career, he compiled a record of 38-4 with 17 knockouts.
The BWAA praised Chang's great speed and footwork, and added, "along with (Yuh Myung-woo), Chang is considered the greatest fighter boxing-rich South Korea ever produced."
Chang won the first 18 bouts of his career before losing a title shot against Hilario Zapata. He won the rematch six months later, knocking him out in the third round to win the WBC junior flyweight title.
Chang will receive his award on June 13 in New York at the IBHOF ceremony.
