Reigning figure skating world champion Kim Yu-na finished second with 65.64 points in the short program after Japan's Miki Ando at the Grand Prix Final in Tokyo Friday.
Skating to a James Bond medley, the 19-year-old opened the program with clean triple lutz-triple toe loop combination, but her second jump, a triple flip, was under-rotated.
She missed a flip jump in the free skating of Skate America last month, where she grabbed a gold medal nevertheless.
She scored 65.64, more than 10 points behind her own personal best of 76.28 set at Skate America, and behind 2007 world champion Ando, who scored 66.20.
Russia's Alena Leonova ranked third with 61.60, and Canada's Joannie Rochette finished fourth with 60.94.
Kim, a two-time Grand Prix Final champion, will try to use the free skating event Saturday to regain her title that was lost to her archrival, Mao Asada of Japan, in Seoul last year.
