South Korean rookie golfer Shin Ji-yai failed to receive the LPGA Player of the Year award by finishing eighth at the LPGA Tour Championship in Houston, Texas, Monday.

The 21-year-old lost the honor to Lorena Ochoa by one point as the Mexican golfer finished second at the season-ending LPGA championship, according to Yonhap News Agency.

Shin, who already clinched the Rookie of the Year award, was taking the lead at the Player of the Year award race over Ochoa by eight points before the Houston tour. She aimed to become the first woman player to take both prizes since Nancy Lopez in 1978.

Shin, who also topped the official money list, hit six under 210 and ranked eighth at the match that had lingered for two days due to rain, while Ochoa finished second with 11 under 205.

Ochoa clinched the award for the fourth straight year with a total of 160 points, nudging her contender Shin by one point.

신지애 LPGA `올해의 선수상'놓쳐

한국의 신예 골퍼 신지애 (21가 미국여자프로골프 (LPGA)투어 시즌 최종전인 LPGA 투어챔피언십에서 8위에 머물러 다 잡았던 '올해의 선수상'을 놓쳤다.

신지애는 대회 최종일 경기에서 멕시코의 로레나 오초아가 2위로 경기를 끝내면서 아깝게 영예의 선수상을 내줬다.

이미 올해의 신인상을 거머쥔 신지애는 투어챔피언십이 시작되기 전만해도 오초아를 8포인트 차이로 앞서 나가고 있었다. 그녀는 1978년 낸시 로페스 이후 처음으로 두 상을 노렸었다.

상금왕에도 올랐던 신지애는 폭우로 이틀 연기된 이번 투어에서 6언더 파 210으로 8위에 오른 반면 오초아는 11언더 파 205로 2위에 올랐다.

오초아는 신지애를 1포인트 차로 제치고 총 160포인트로 4년 연속 올해의 선수에 올랐다.
