Golfers English Speech

Golfer Shin Ji-yai
South Korean golfer Shin Ji-yai, who won the LPGA's top rookie prize this year and the money title, received standing ovation with her moving speech, which she delivered in English.

At the award ceremony for the 2009 LPGA in Houston, Texas, Shin delivered a short speech after receiving the award.

During the five-minute speech, she thanked people who supported her and wished a "sincere good-luck" to Lorena Ochoa, her archrival, with whom she has to compete for other awards.

Then, she moved on to say why she started golf. "When the Korean golfer Pak Se-ri won the 1998 U.S. Women's Open, it changed my life," Yonhap Saturday cited her as saying. "I was a quiet, introverted girl. But golf has changed me to gain confidence and open up myself."

"Golf is a good companion in my life's journey, but it is also a mountain that I have to climb as well," she said.

When she brought up the story of her mother, who passed away in 2003 in a car accident, the scene became solemn.

"Um Ma!" Shin uttered in Korean. It means "mom."

She continued, in English. "Mom, I love you. I know you're always with me in spirit."

She also thanked her father. "Dad, you've sacrificed so much for me. You're my inspiration. You're my source of love, but ." She paused.

"But once in a while, Dad, you also a pain in my neck." The audience burst into laughter.

When Shin finished her English speech, the audience sprang from their seats, giving a standing ovation, as if they had planned it out beforehand. People, one by one, approached Shin, complimenting her speech. "It was really moving," an audience member told her.

The usually shy golfer doesn't perceive herself as a public speaker. But she proved she was a talent for it.

"I practiced a lot because I had to deliver it in English," she said, adding a confession. "Actually, I was very nervous through the speech. Now I am done and free," she beamed with smile.
