Wyverns Rebound With 11-6 Win

By Kang Seung-woo
Staff Reporter

The SK Wyverns rebounded from a 2-0 deficit in the 2007 Korean Series against the Doosan Bears, with Kim Sung-keun's side matching their epic win in the second round of the playoffs.

The two-time defending champion provided a glimpse of another come-from-behind victory, routing the Kia Tigers 11-6 in Game 3 in Incheon, Monday, to trim the series to 2-1.

Wyverns starter Gary Glover tossed a no-hitter over 4 2/3 innings and first baseman Park Jung-kwon produced four hits, including a two-run homer, with four RBIs and two runs.

Game 4 will take place at Munhak Stadium on Tuesday.

The Wyverns jumped on 13-game winner Rick Guttormson of the United States from the start.

Left fielder Park Jae-sang double to left-center and Park Jung-kwon, who batted third, hit an RBI single to left to put the Wyverns ahead for a 1-0 lead in the first.

Choi Jeong opened the second with a walk and catcher Chung Sang-ho, who had a solo shot in each of the first two games, doubled home Choi to make it 2-0.

The Wyverns continued to hit Guttormson hard in front of a sellout crowd of 27,800.

In the third, Park Jae-sang drew a walk and Park Jung-kwon, who had three long drives in the second round, reignited his dormant big swing, lining a two-run homer that landed in the left-field seats and forced the right-hander to walk off the mound.

The first two games of the best-of-seven series were not decided until the end of the actions _ 5-3 in Game 1 and 2-1 in Game 2 _ but the third game unexpectedly turned into a lop-sided one, as the home side extended its winning margin on the day.

With the bases loaded, two consecutive hit batsmen by right-handed reliever Seo Jae-weong gave the Wyverns a 6-0 advantage and Park Jae-hong's infield single and Cho Dong-hwa's grounder put the Incheon-based club up 8-0.

The Tigers, held hitless over 6 1/3 innings, got their first hit of the night in the seventh, and eventually scored to avoid a shutout in a wacky way.

Ahn Chi-hong hit a single to left off lefty Lee Seung-ho and Lee Hyun-gon followed that with another single to right and advanced to second on right fielder Park Jae-hong's error.

Facing Kim Won-sup, Lee's first pitch scooted past the catcher and Ahn sped home for the team's first run.

Kim Sang-hyun, the league's home run leader, played up to his billing as the seven-year pro lofted the first pitch from Ko Hyo-joon over the left-center field wall in the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 8-4, which was canceled out in the bottom of the inning as the Wyverns put up three runs.

The Tigers added two runs in the final inning but those were not enough to turn the game around.
