The long-awaited debut of Park Chan-ho's for the Philadelphia Phillies turned into a brief and poor outing as he lasted just 3 1/3 innings.
The 35-year-old right-hander started against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field in Denver, Colo., Monday (Seoul Time), and allowed five runs, seven hits, including a homer, and three walks during the spell, but the defending World Series champions surged to a 7-5 win on late-inning homers from Chase Utley and Matt Stairs.
Park, who beat J.A. Happ to become No. 5 pitcher in the rotation in spring training, was lifted in the fourth inning with runners first and second.
He pitched 96, 55 for strikes, and posted a 10.38 ERA.
Park's poor performance has continued the Phillies' pitching woe.
No one in the rotation has notched a quality start, which is allowing three earned runs or less and pitching six innings or more, going 1-3 with a 9.62 ERA through Monday.
The South Korean, who spent most of last season in the bullpen with the Los Angeles Dodgers, was not good enough to close out the first inning on 48 pitches at the ball park, where he was 5-2 with a 5.66 ERA in 17 career appearances in his 15-year career and last toed the rubber in April 2006, when he played for the San Diego Padres.
Park allowed four runs on five hits, including a two-run single by second baseman Clint Barmes, and in the second, he yielded a solo shot to leadoff hitter Dexter Fowler to make it 5-1.
Park threw nine pitches to end the third, but a single by Ryan Spilborghs and a walk to Brad Hawpe in the next inning forced Phillies manager Charlie Manuel to replace him with Chad Durbin, who delivered two scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
With Philadelphia down 5-3 in the eighth, All-Star second baseman Utley hit a game-tying two-run home run off Manuel Corpas and pinch-hitting specialist Matt Stairs smacked a go-ahead two-run bomb off Huston Street to put the Phillies on top for good.
Choo Has Multihit Game
Cleveland Indians outfielder Choo Shin-soo had his second multihit game in a 8-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.
It is the first victory of the season for Cleveland.
Choo, 26, who batted sixth and manned right field, went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run. He also drew two walks.
After advancing on a walk in his first at-bat in the second inning, he doubled in the third.
He walked again in the fifth and scored on a double by Trevor Crowe, and hit a RBI single in the eighth.
The left-swinger, who had the first homer of the season two days ago, has batted .353, 6-for-17 in five games, with a three-game hitting streak.
