Lee Ho-suk Wins 1,000-Meter Short-Track Event

South Korean Lee Ho-suk edged two-time Olympic gold medalist Apolo Anto Ohno of the United States to grab a gold medal in the men's 1,000-meter event at the world short track speed skating championships here on Sunday.

The 22-year-old, who gained a lead in the four-way race with just two lanes left, was nearly overtaken by Ohno during the last curve, but successfully outleaned the American by sticking his foot across the finish line first.

Lee, who earned a gold medal in the 5,000-meter relay of the 2006 Winter Olympics, finished the race with a time of one minute 26.462 seconds while Ohno, who scored a gold medal the previous day in the 500-meter event, came second with a time of 1:26.528.

Song Kyung-taek, the South Korean who won a gold medal in the 1,500-meter event on the opening day of the competition on Friday and leads in overall points, came third with a time of 1:26.615. Charles Hamelin of Canada finished fourth in 1:26.833.

In the women's 1,000-meter event, China's Wang Meng proved her dominance by winning her second gold medal of the annual competition. Wang, who notched a gold medal in the 500-meter event on Saturday, finished in 1:32.527 while her compatriot Zhou Yang came second with a time of 1:32.595.

Canada's Kalyna Roberge came third in 1:32.636 while South Korea's Yang Shin-young finished fourth in 1:32.666.
