A group of Myanmar nationals based in South Korea held a pro-democracy and ethnic-rights demonstration in front of the Myanmar Embassy in Seoul on Sept. 23.
The group named the All Ethnics Democracy and Human Rights Network staged a peaceful demonstration lasting from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in which John Thang, Asia Pacific representative of The Global Digest read out a statement concerning the "September uprising ― Burmese anti-dictator government protests in 2007.”
Parts of the statement read:
“Today marks the fifth anniversary of the ‘September uprising’ which started in 2007. We, the All Ethnics Democracy and Human Rights Network strongly condemn the Myanmar military junta for crimes against humanity and human rights violations.
“Although the current new government promised to promote democracy, the ethnic minorities of Myanmar, in particular Christian and Muslim are threatened more than other sectors of the population,” the statement continued.
“Therefore, we, the All Ethnics Democracy and Human Rights Network, demand that the Myanmar military junta immediately cease conflict in Kachin state and its human rights violations and repression upon the ethnic people, make amendment of the constitution, for example, Buddhist position (sic) above other religions and immediately relieve ethnic people from other forms of political and economic repression.
“Furthermore, we ask that the government of the Republic of Korea and the international community show staunch support for the cause of democracy and the end of ethnic repression in Myanmar. We also ask for a greater support for ethnic victims from the repression and violence in Myanmar.”
After staging a silent vigil the group dispersed in a peaceful fashion.
