Britain continues English program for NK defectors

The British Embassy is calling for final applications for its free English program for young North Korean defectors. The deadline is today.

Dubbed “English for the Future,” the program was launched last May. Nearly 70 students benefited from the program in its first year.
One hundred applicants will be selected for the second year, and be enrolled for one-year courses at the British Council.

At the end of the course, students can apply for an internship offered from sponsoring companies or a Chevening scholarship sponsored by the British government.

Feedback from recipients and the North Korean defectors community has been very positive. One defector who was on the program last year told The Korea Times that it helped him a great deal.

Another defector hoped his teenage son would be given a chance to go on the program when he reaches 18.
