Hungry Indian boy sucks at dog's breast in footage

Chotu Kumar, a six-year-old boy, is suckling on milk from stray dogs whenever he gets hungry in India in a footage, the Huffington Post reported on July 6.

The video shows the boy grabbing at the bitch’s hind legs so he can drink her milk, and surprisingly the dog lets him drink.

Chotu is living with his mother Shanichari Devi, 37, his grandmother Amiya Devi, 60, and his two brothers -- Bola, 14, and Mahesh, 3, in a mud house in Jharkhand, eastern India.

His mother and grandmother go out to the forest to collect firewood and find forest food. And the elder brother was forced to go out to work to earn money for the family but he only brings home under £20 a month (about 35000won) working at a nearby hotel. After his father's death four years ago, the family has been going through a hard time because of poverty.

“Our family is very poor, sometimes I get hungry” the Indian boy said. “The dog doesn't bite me. I like her and she likes me, she treats me like one of her puppies. I love to play with the dogs, they’re my friends.”

However, his mother was shocked when she saw the scene at first. "While he was playing with the dogs outside the house I saw him drinking the bitch's milk. I was so shocked. I ran over and pulled him away. But ever since whenever he is hungry he has always slipped back. I have let him because I know how hungry he is" she said.

Internet users who saw the video clip on YouTube posted comments like "I'm so sorry to him, I can't say anything" and "We have to help the starving boy at any cost."

According to Unicef, 50 percent of children under the age of three are malnourished in rural areas of Jharkhand. It shows the reality of harsh life in India, too.

오랫동안 굶주림에 시달리던 소년이 개의 젖을 먹는 영상이 공개됐다.

미국 온라인매체 허핑턴포스트 등 외신에 따르면 인도 자르칸드주에 사는 여섯 살 소년 초투 쿠마르는 배가 고플 때마다 떠돌이 개들의 젖을 먹는다.

보도에 따르면 쿠마르는 엄마 샤니차리 데비(37), 할머니 아미야 데비(60), 형 볼라 쿠마르(14), 남동생 마헤쉬 쿠마르(3)와 함께 진흙으로 지은 집에서 산다. 4년 전 아빠가 세상을 떠난 후 엄마와 할머니가 숲에 가서 장작과 먹을 것을 구해오고, 형이 인근 호텔에서 허드렛일을 해서 한 달에 20파운드(약 3만5000원)를 벌어오지만 다섯 식구가 하루 세끼를 챙겨 먹기엔 턱없이 부족하다.

그래서 쿠마르는 가족들이 일하러 나간 사이 떠돌이 개들과 친구처럼 지내왔다. 학교도 못 가고 친구도 없는 쿠마르에겐 떠돌이 개가 유일한 친구였다.

쿠마르의 엄마 데비는 집에 먹을 것이 떨어져 모두가 며칠 동안 굶고 있을 때, 쿠마르가 개의 젖을 먹는 모습을 처음 봤다고 한다. 그는 현지 언론과의 인터뷰에서 “너무 충격적이어서 달려가 아이를 떼어냈다”며 “이후에도 배가 고플 때마다 쿠마르는 개의 젖을 먹었다. 얼마나 배가 고픈지를 알기 때문에 이후엔 그냥 뒀다”고 밝혔다.

유튜브에 공개된 쿠마르의 모습에 네티즌들은 충격적이라는 반응을 보였다. “너무 안타까워 할 말이 없다”, “누구는 먹을 게 넘쳐나서 버리는데 누구는 개의 젖을 먹다니…”, “어떻게든 쿠마르를 도와야 한다”는 등 안타깝다는 댓글들이 잇달았다.

허핑턴포스트는 “유니세프((UNICEF·유엔아동기금) 조사 결과, 자르칸드주 교외 지역 세 살 이하 어린이의 50%가 영양실조로 나타났다”며 인도 어린이들이 처한 냉혹한 현실을 전했다.
