Another murder in LA by Canada’s alleged cannibal killer?

Canada’s alleged cannibal killer Luke Rocco Magnotta, 29, may be responsible for another torso murder in LA in late January.

Magnotta was caught at an Internet cafe in Berlin on June 4, but he now may be charged for the LA murder.

In the late January, the remains of a retired airline worker were found in LA. The body of Hervey Medellin, 66, was found by dog walkers near the Hollywood sign after one of the dogs found a plastic bag containing his severed head.

LA police told ABC News that Medellin was openly gay, and noted that Medellin’s hands and feet had also been cut off.

These similarities suggest that Magnotta may have murdered Medellin, thus police are investigating the case.

Magnotta is expected to be extradited to Canada this weekend.

Magnotta was caught at an Internet cafe in Berlin on June 4 for killing his lover Jun Lin, 33, a Chinese student who was studying at Concordia University in Montreal, in late May at his apartment. He also videotaped and posted the video of him killing Lin online and sent Lin’s hands and feet in the mail to schools in Vancouver and political offices in Ottawa.

캐나다에서 동성 애인을 토막 살해하고 사체의 일부를 먹는 등 엽기적 범행을 저지른 전직 도색영화 배우가 로스앤젤레스 할리우드에서도 유사한 범행을 자행한 정황이 드러나 미국 경찰이 수사에 착수했다.

로스앤젤레스 경찰은 지난 1월 할리우드 뒷산에서 토막난 사체로 발견된 허비 메데인(66)의 살인 용의자로 최근 독일에서 체포된 루카 로코 매그노타(29)를 지목하고 수사를 벌이고 있다고 지역 방송 KTLA가 8일 (현지시간) 보도했다.

매그노타는 캐나다 몬트리올에서 동성애 관계였던 중국 유학생 린준(33)을 자신의 거처에서 토막 살해한 뒤 이 과정을 담은 동영상을 인터넷에 올리고 린준의 손과 발을 잘라 캐나다 여야 정당에 우송하는 엽기행각을 벌인 혐의로 수배됐다가 지난 4일 독일 베를린에서 체포됐다.

경찰은 매그노타가 로스앤젤레스에서 포르노 배우로 활동하면서 할리우드 근처에서 거주한 적이 있다는 사실에 주목하고 메데인 살해 사건의 진범일 가능성이 있다고 보고 있다.

메데인은 당시 잘려진 머리가 비닐 봉지에 담긴 채 먼저 발견됐고 대대적인 수색에 나선 경찰이 잘린 손과 발을 추가로 찾아냈지만 몸통은 찾지 못했다.

경찰은 특히 메데인이 매그노타에게 토막 살해된 린처럼 동성애자인데다 린 역시 아직 머리 부분을 찾아내지 못했다는 점에서 매그노타의 관련 가능성을 높게 판단했다.

경찰은 메데인이 피살된 것으로 추정되는 지난해 12월에 매그노타가 로스앤젤레스에 살지 않았다는 사실을 밝혀냈지만 매그노타가 많은 가명을 사용했기에 로스앤젤레스에 없었다는 서류상 부재 증명은 큰 의미가 없는 것으로 보고 있다.

지난 1월 로스앤젤레스의 포주가 매그노타를 남창(男娼)으로 고용하고 있었다는 소문도 있다.

매그노타가 매데인의 사체가 발견된 뒤 몇주 후 페이스북에 자신을 로스앤젤레스에서 마사지사로 일한다는 광고를 올렸다는 설도 나돌고 있으나 경찰은 이에 대한 확인을 거부했다.
