Dubai publishes world’s ’largest book’

Deputy Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashed Al Maktoum has launched the world's largest book on the Prophet Mohammad, titled “This Is Mohammad,” Gulfnews reported.

About 100 people worked on the book which is made of a fine mixture of paper and leather for 16 months in Germany. The 420-page publication weighs 1,500 kilograms and is 5 meters in height and 4.03 meters in width.

The previous biggest was a 346-page book measuring 4.18 meters by 3.77 meters and weighing about 1,420 kilograms. It was printed out in Hungary.

“I am convinced that this book is the biggest in the world," said Vince Sharma, the official adjudicator.

The project was carried out under the sponsorship of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai.

The book will travel around the world to be exhibited and 500,000 copies of the normal-sized version in Arabic and English will be sold,” said Dr. Mohammed Saeed Al Awlaki. “Also, it will have copies in Russian, Chinese, Italian, Uzbek and Braille.” he said.

After the touring exhibition, the original book will be on permanent display at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi.

두바이 `가장 큰 책' 기네스 도전

(두바이=연합뉴스) 유현민 특파원 = 아랍에미리트(UAE) 두바이가 '세계에서 가장 큰 책' 기네스 기록에 도전한다.

셰이크 함단 빈 라시드 알 막툼 두바이 부통치자는 지난 28일 이슬람교 예언자 모하메드의 일대기를 담은 `이분이 모하메드다'(모하메드)라는 제목의 책을 공개했다고 현지 일간지 걸프뉴스가 29일 보도했다.

가죽과 재생지를 활용해 독일에서 16개월 동안 약 100명을 동원해 만든 이 책은 높이 5ｍ, 폭 4.03ｍ으로 431쪽에 무게만 1천500㎏에 달한다.

헝가리가 제작해 현재 가장 큰 책으로 기네스 기록을 보유한 책은 높이 4.18ｍ, 폭 3.77ｍ, 346쪽, 무게 1천420㎏이라고 신문은 전했다.

전날 공개행사에 참석한 기네스 관계자 빈 샤르마는 "직접 세 차례나 측정한 결과 크기와 무게, 쪽수로 볼 때 세계에서 가장 큰 책이라고 확신한다"고 말했다.

셰이크 함단 부통치자의 후원으로 이 책을 제작한 모하마드 알 올라키 박사는 아랍어 원본을 가지고 조만간 세계 순회 전시에 나선다고 밝혔다.

아울러 일반 크기로 제작한 아랍어판과 영어판 50만 부를 순회 전시하며 함께 배포할 방침이다.

또 2쇄부터는 시각장애인용 점자와 프랑스어, 이탈리아어, 러시아어, 중국어, 우즈벡어 등으로도 출판될 예정이다.

세계 순회 전시를 마친 원본은 아부다비의 `셰이크 자이드 그랜드 모스크'에 영구 전시된다.
