Is Filipino president in love with Korean woman?

Filipino President Benigno S. Aquino III has set off an Internet sensation over a relationship with a Korean woman.

The 52-year-old unmarried head of state is reportedly in a romantic relationship with Grace Lee, a popular TV host and radio disc jockey in the Philippines. She recently turned 30 and her Korean name is Lee Kyung-hee.

Both Aquino and Lee have remained silent on their relationship. Aquino’s spokesman also refused to confirm on it in the latest press briefing, saying “We do not comment on private matters of the President.”

The rumor flared up last week by a Twitter posting that said Aquino went out on a date with Lee.

South Korea’s news wire Newsis cited other Twitter messages to say that the two had dinner at a restaurant and then the President drove her home. It didn’t mention the exact date or location.

A witness was quoted as saying in the report, “Grace Lee led the conversation (with Aquino). The atmosphere during dinner was peaceful and harmonious.”

Filipino media outlets have already churned out stories regarding the couple, raising the possibility for her to become the South Asian nation’s first lady.

Judging from reports from the Philippines, their relationship appears to have become closer than just friendship.

Lee said on her Twitter account last Friday, “I never said we dated. Nor did I say we are text mates. Nor that he comes to visit me." During a TV news program she said, “He (President Aquino) has my highest respect so I think that it’s better that I leave it to the President to speak on the matter.”

All media eyes were on the President last Friday when he appeared in public to attend a high-profile event. Despite a barrage of questions from reporters, Aquino just smiled and remained tight-lipped, according to Filipino news reports.

The two reportedly first met in June last year at a groundbreaking ceremony for a power station in Cebu where Lee was the event’s emcee. Aquino acknowledged Lee as “gwapa” (beautiful) before he made his speech, according to local media.

Lee was born and raised in Seoul, but moved to the Philippines at the age of 10 because of her father’s business.

그레이스 리는 자신이 앵커로 활동하는 지상파 방송 GMA TV 뉴스에 나와 “아키노 대통령은 가장 존경하는 분이기 때문에 그 문제에 대해선 대통령에게 맡기는 게 낫다고 생각한다”고 말했다. 또 트위터에는 ‘결코 데이트 했다거나 문자친구라고 말한 적이 없다. 그가 나를 방문한 적도 없다’는 글을 올렸다.

아키노 대통령과 그레이스 리는 지난해 6월말 필리핀 중부 세부에서 개최된 한국전력의 발전소 준공식에서 처음 만났다. 아키노 대통령은 당시 행사의 공동 사회자 그레이스 리에게 각별한 관심을 보인 것으로 알려졌다. 그는 “참석자 모두가 아름답지만 그레이스 리가 가장 아름답다”며 “사랑을 찾기 위해서라면 세부에 정착할 수도 있다”는 말을 한 것으로 전해졌다. 아키노 대통령은 그레이스 리가 한국어가 아닌 타갈로그어와 영어를 번갈아 구사하는 것에 특히 끌렸다고 한다.

그레이스 리는 열살 때 가족을 따라 필리핀으로 이주했으며 현재 GMA TV의 ‘쇼비즈센터’와 라디오 프로그램을 진행하고 있다. 지난해 12월에는 라디오 프로그램에서 아키노 대통령을 단독 인터뷰 하기도 했다.

노이노이(NoyNoy)라는 애칭을 가진 아키노 대통령은 독재 반대운동을 하다 암살된 필리핀 민주화의 영웅 베니그노 아키노 상원의원과 코라손 아키노 전 대통령의 아들이다. 그러나 여성 정치인, 여배우, 스타일리스트 등과의 열애설이 끊이지 않았다.
