Son adds another bronze in World Cup
Korean rhythmic gymnast Son Yeon-jae won another bronze medal for her performance in the ribbon event in the World Cup in Sofia, Saturday. “I tried my best to concentrate over and over to offset the mistakes that I made in the clubs section. After my ribbon show I thought this was nicely demonstrated,” Son said. “I will do my best at the Olympic Games.” With the nation’s first bronze medal she earned at the World Cup series in the hoops last Sunday, Son left an indelible mark for Korea’s rhythmic gymnastics by adding a second one. On Friday, the 17-year-old came seventh, earning a total of 109,800 points; 27,775 in the hoops, 26,550 with the ball, 27,750 in the clubs, and 27,725 with the ribbon, which put her into the final round. The next day at the final, she failed to reach a medal in the hoops with 27,700 points ranking her fourth, followed by ranking seventh in the clubs with 24,900 points. However, she finally grabbed a medal with 27,300 points in the ribbon along with Ukraine’s Ganna Rizatdinova. Son’s coach Jelena Lipyordova said she was glad to see her achievement at the event, adding that their efforts had finally paid off. She also expressed high expectations for her performance in the London Olympics. “Son’s accomplishment of winning two medals consecutively in the World Cup is the first time ever in the nation’s gymnastics history,” said Suh Hea-jung, an international referee. “She keeps making new history in gymnastics as she participates in the events. I’m so proud of her.” In the competition, Russia’s Yevgeniya Kanayeva won gold medal with 28.625 points, while Bulgaria’s star Silvia Miteva came second with 27.600. Son plans to go back to Russia to prepare for the upcoming World Cup series in Uzbekistan, scheduled to begin May 16. She gained extensive attention when she earned a spot at the London Olympic Games last September. |
