By Park Si-soo
Shin Sang-woo, a former vice National Assembly speaker who was known as a key adviser to the late former President Roh Moo-hyun, died Thursday of liver cancer, his aides said Friday. He was 75.
He had suffered from cancer since 2010. He was also a key patron of former President Kim Young-sam.
The Korea University dropout made his political debut in 1971, winning a parliamentary seat under the ticket of the then main opposition New Democratic Party. He had won reelection seven times by 2000.
Roh graduated from the same high school as Shin in Busan, the nation’s second largest city, and their close relationship saw him acquire the nickname of “the President’s mentor.”
During Roh’s presidency, he assumed several influential posts, including chairman of the Korea Baseball Organization and vice chairman of the National Unification and Advisory Council.
He is survived by his wife Cho Gang-jeong and three sons. The funeral is scheduled for Monday 9 a.m. at the Samsung Medical Center in southern Seoul. For more information, call 02-3410-6907.
